Just Never Give Up!

Well talk about extreme ups and downs, coming off one of my lowest moments in the sport with Challenge Melbourne, my first pro race which I DNF’d, to one of the highest moments getting on the podium as 3rd Professional at Busselton 70.3 (fastest bike time), my second pro race. There were definitely demons from my race in Melbourne that came up through the race in Busso but breaking through these has made me so much stronger and more resilient. Getting straight back on the horse was the best thing I could have done.

The race day started the most nervous I have ever been, the swim was not the best, I really enjoyed the bike and the run started great but in the last 10km it was truly survival. I suffered, but racing for those who can’t, got me through!! The amazing supporters on course were cheering on the first lap ‘keep it up Kerry you’re flying and look great’…… too the second lap ‘Hold on Kerry you got this’….. too the third lap which was slow clapping, with a very worried look on their faces! I finished the race and was taken straight to medical which is pretty standard for me, but there is no way I was going to miss the champagne showers! Standing on that podium with someone I really look up to, Katey Gibb, was amazing and it still brings a massive smile to my face!

I had a great race on the weekend but I have walked away with a bag full of lessons learnt and things to work on to get faster and more efficient. I love racing in the pro ranks as it is more tactical and a fairer race. It is a lot more fun, as you know exactly where your competition is and you are battling on a level playing field and not getting caught up with other age group competitors as much.

At the moment I feel extremely lucky and sometimes wonder what I have done to end up so blessed and fortunate, but something my late Grandpa would say is ‘Lady luck wears overalls’ and if you ask anyone I train with or people who know me well, my overalls are covered with dirt, grease and full of holes and that’s just the way I like it!

Thank you to my team, this is not an individual sport and I greatly appreciate the part you all play in helping me become my best. Firstly Luke and my family, you are my rocks, Mike Gee and my squad, Greg Murphy Joondalup Sports Remedial Massage, Steve Gleeson, 32Gi, Blueforce and Dare2Tri!!
